dotOcean is a young and growing technology company specialized in autonomous vessels and drones for the maritime and defense industry. Based in Bruges, we create the latest technology for our international customers. You can be part of our fast growing team building the next autonomous water drone or create products which explores soil structures at water depths deeper than 4000 m. At this moment we are a small yet growing team of 11 people. But we urgently need reinforcement to support our continuous growth.

About the position

As an AI Research Engineer, you are the expert in AI domains such as computer vision, machine learning and deep learning. You dream about creating the next generation of autonomous robotics intelligence and swarms of intelligent drones.

Key responsibilities

  • Work closely with the research team and project manager
  • Take ownership of research projects and reporting
  • Be the AI expert in the dotOcean team
  • Design the next generation algorithms to improve robotic decision making and motion planning in a virtual world
  • Explain your research to your colleagues so you can learn from each other
  • Bring ideas to the table and set up proof of concepts to demonstrate cutting-edge research concepts

Experience & skills we are looking for

  • A Master of Science or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Math or Physics
  • Programming experience in one or more of the following languages: Python and/or C/C++
  • Work with libraries and toolkits such as GPU libraries, Matplotlib, OpenCV, TensorFlow,…
  • Familiar with Linux OS
  • Machine learning (CNN, RNN, LSTM, Transformers, VAE, DRL), algorithmic foundations of multi-agent optimization, advanced statistics and artificial intelligence (AI) in general, are your second nature
  • Simulation technologies, knowledge of Unity or Unreal engines is a plus
  • Ability to design and execute on research agenda
  • Ability to work fluently in English (spoken and written)
  • Proactive work ethic and strong communication skills to ensure your research is understood and implemented in the best possible way
  • Able to guide architectural & technical discussions and you ensure the bigger picture is never lost during a technical deep dive
  • Always eager to learn and develop yourself further
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills, intelligence, and initiative

About the position

As our DevOps and SRE you will create the automated environment to support our rapidly expanding edge, fog and cloud systems to support our distributed automation and swarming technology. You love measuring the process and reporting it. You believe that systems operation is a software problem. You are either a software engineer with a good IT administration background or a highly skilled system administrator with knowledge of coding and automation. You will spend maximum 50% of your time on ‘ops’ related work (and try lowering that with automation) and >50% on developing the next level of automation, self-healing and scaling infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

  • Build and maintain self-service tools for our software team so they can focus on feature development. Eg. Automatic provisioning of test environments, automated testing & releasing, …
  • Work closely with the project manager and product engineers to ensure designed solution responds to requirements such as availability, performance, security and maintainability
  • Create and maintain automated solutions for operational aspects such as monitoring, performance and capacity planning, and disaster response
  • Balance the risk of system unavailability with rapid innovation and efficient service operations

Experience & skills we are looking for

  • A (recent) bachelor’s degree in software development or IT domain or equal by experience
  • DevOps and SRE mindset: automating your way out of it
  • Experience with programming and/or scripting languages such as Bash, Python, Javascript/TypeScript, C# and C++
  • Experience with cloud platforms like AWS & Google Cloud, oVirt
  • Good knowledge of Kubernetes, Terraform, Cloud Formation, Docker and/or Ansible
  • Experience with network protocols, security and firewalls
  • Experience with Linux environments
  • A team player with a proactive mindset
  • Ability to operate in a high-growth, high-velocity organization

What you’ll be doing

  • We are specifically looking for experienced software developers who can help building out our software team
  • You create and maintain user friendly software for our new products
  • You bring in experience on complex IT issues

Who we’re looking for

  • You have a Bachelor or Master in ICT/software development or equal by experience
  • You have experience in understanding business requirements and translating it into software functionality
  • You have a very thorough knowledge of C, C++ and/or C#
  • You have knowledge of websockets and MSSQL
  • You are a creative problem solver and you always thing out of the box
  • You are willing to improve your personal technical skills
  • You are able to cooperate and work in a multidisciplinary and self-managing team

Considered as a big plus

  • Experience of or a strong interest in maritime and/or offshore industry
  • Strong interests in embedded systems, remote control of robotics and mechatronics
  • Experience with working on Software as a Service applications
  • A good knowledge of English
